  I came here today with my mother for a follow up MBI after an abnormal mammogram. My mom has always had abnornal mammograms but this is the first time she has been asked for any kind of additional imaging afterwards so she was terrified that she has breast cancer like her mother and grandmother did. She asked for me to come with her today because she was very scared. She has been trying to get in contact with the radiologist who ordered the MBI because it seemed unclear why they suddenly ordered this test for the first time. She was unable to speak with them so we came early to see if we could get a quick word in with the radiologist. The two women at the front desk were short with my mother when she asked to speak with the physician for clarification and when she expressed doubt over whether she wanted to go forward with the MBI, snidely commented that the radiocontrast is very expensive and ordered specially for her. As someone who works as a nurse I found this behavior not only unprofessional but also disrespectful and not at all compassionate towards my mother who just wants some simple clarification and communication which she is very much entitled to. When I moved to go in the back area with my mother to talk to the radiologist, they said that I was not allowed to go back with her which I find crazy... an office area has no reason to be restricted to patients’ family members. Patients ALWAYS have the right to advocate for themselves and should never be talked down to in a time of stress. I know from experience that working with stressed out patients can be difficult but these receptionists only served to demean my mother.
